Low-year strategy

A simple four-step roadmap

Do not try to join everything. Build one credible skill signal, one real project, and one relationship engine.

Step 01 · Week 1

Set up your search system

Complete Handshake, create a one-page resume, bookmark career calendars, and turn on job alerts for “intern,” “student,” and “early career.”

Step 02 · Weeks 1–3

Join two communities

Pick one builder community (ACM SIG, consulting, design, research) and one competitive community (ICPC, quant, trading, hackathons).

Step 03 · This semester

Ship evidence

Finish one project, client engagement, research deliverable, or competition submission that can become a strong resume bullet.

Step 04 · Every month

Review the pipeline

Track openings, deadlines, applications, interviews, alumni conversations, and next actions in one spreadsheet or Notion board.

These sources help you discover new opportunities after any static list becomes outdated.

International student checkpoint

Use this guide as a discovery tool, then confirm your individual case with ISSS.

  • On-campus employment is generally limited to a combined 20 hours per week while classes are in session for F-1/J-1 students.
  • Off-campus internships may require CPT or another form of work authorization before work begins.
  • Company policies differ: some postings explicitly reject sponsorship or immigration support; others require case-by-case verification.
  • Do not assume that “international students may apply” means the employer will sponsor future full-time employment.

How to read the visa labels

Cards use conservative wording:

  • No sponsorship: the official posting explicitly says immigration support is unavailable.
  • Verify: the source did not provide a clear policy in the public text reviewed.
  • On-campus: usually more accessible to international students, but hour limits and eligibility still apply.
  • Competition/program: often does not require employment authorization, but location and residency rules may apply.

Recruiting rhythm

What to watch through the year

Use this timing map to avoid discovering programs after they close.

AUG–OCT

Main recruiting launch

Large-company internships, engineering fairs, RSO recruiting, consulting applications, and many quant/finance roles move quickly.

NOV–JAN

Early programs + research

Pre-internship programs, freshman/sophomore events, summer research, and spring student organization recruiting appear.

FEB–APR

Research + competitions

SPIN, REUs, HackIllinois, IPL, IMC Prosperity, and late-cycle startup or local internships become important.

MAY–JUL

Build and prepare

Complete projects, sharpen technical skills, prepare resumes, and create alerts before the next recruiting wave begins.
